How to Choose a Garden Trellis: Start With the Plant, Not the Product
A trellis is one of those products that looks simple in a product photo and gets complicated once you stand in front of an empty bed. The good news: four measurements settle most of the decision.
- The mature plant, not the young one. Check how tall and wide your climber is expected to get this season. A support sized for a seedling is the most common mismatch.
- The support pattern. Dense grids suit plants that grab onto everything; wider spacing suits plants with thicker stems. Look at how your plant actually climbs.
- The installation surface. A wall-mounted trellis and a freestanding one are different projects. Confirm what the panel fixes to and with what hardware.
- Your reach. Leave room to tie, prune, water, and harvest from the side you will actually work from.
Once those four are on paper, most trellises either fit your space or they do not. Compare the stated dimensions with the space you measured, and include the fixing hardware in the plan.
Our plant supports collection lists dimensions and installation notes for each model, so you can compare against your own measurements.
